A Glimpse into the Past: A Look at the Gahanna Historical Society

When one thinks of the typical American city, images of towering skyscrapers, bustling metropolises, and neon signage may come to mind. However, nestled in the hills of central Ohio is the city of Gahanna, whose history dates back to the early 19th century. Gahanna was founded in 1812 by John Clark, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was initially known as Clark’s Village but was later renamed Gahanna, an Native American word meaning “three creeks.” Throughout the 19th century, Gahanna grew steadily, thanks to its location on the National Road, the first federally funded highway in the United States. Today, Gahanna is a thriving city of over 32,000 residents. The Gahanna Historical Society is housed in the Old Gahanna City Hall, which was built in 1881. The Society’s collections include photographs, documents, and artifacts.

The Gahanna Historical Society is just one of the many ways the city of Gahanna preserves its history. The city is also home to the John Clark House, the oldest building in Gahanna, and the Gahanna Lincoln Depot, where President Abraham Lincoln stopped during his 1861 inauguration train tour.
